How could I prevent this from happening to me?
- Do your research. Your contractor should have real life references.
- Also, check their trade references such as their business accounts with Lowes’ or Sherwin Williams, etc. Find out if they’re paying on time or not.
- Google search their name for complaints.
- Check Better Business Bureau.
- Have they switched business names recently? Be careful. This may or may not be a red flag for you to watch out for. Perhaps, they created a new business name to cover up a blemished past. You can ask what their previous name was and research a bit deeper.

Last year, we encountered a retired school teacher who trusted the wrong contractor and got swindled out of her retirement. We would have loved nothing more to have come to her rescue and build her the home of her dreams, but she didn’t have enough budget left to complete her home building project. The contractor had taken draws in cash and would threaten her to stop working if she didn’t pay. After Green Branch Construction took a closer look, we realized he had spent half of her $400,000 budget and had only completed the beginning portion of construction.
